(THIS IS AN EMERGENCY APPOINTMENT POSITION)

 BACKGROUND

The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) is currently seeking California Licensed Nurse Practitioners and/or Physician Assistants to serve in the capacity of an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Advanced Provider and work alongside an LAFD Firefighter/Paramedic to staff Advanced Provider Response Units (APRUs) within the Mobile Integrated Health Unit of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Bureau.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

In EMS every moment counts and the LAFD is in search of qualified NPs or PAs that can make a life-changing difference in the heart of emergency responses.

 

·         Emergency Response: Respond to 911 calls, delivering advanced expertise in high-pressure situations.

·         Rapid Decision-Making: Make critical decisions on the spot, utilizing your advanced medical knowledge to assess and address emergent patient needs.

·         Life-Saving Interventions: Administer life-saving treatments and interventions in the field, bridging the gap between emergency response and comprehensive healthcare.

·         Mobile Healthcare Excellence: Delivering healthcare directly to the scene, offering advanced medical care beyond traditional emergency response capabilities.

·         Dynamic Patient Care: Provide on-the-go patient care, from initial assessment to stabilization, ensuring the best possible outcomes for diverse medical emergencies.

·         Collaborative Teamwork: Work seamlessly with paramedics, EMTs, and other healthcare professionals to deliver cohesive and efficient patient care during critical moments.

·         Advanced Procedures: Possess in-depth knowledge of procedural skills and the ability to perform in a dynamic environment. Duties include advanced airway, ultrasonography, wound care, and perform other critical interventions.

·         Diagnostic Aptitude: Expertise in diagnostic reasoning to assess and identify medical conditions rapidly, diagnose and treat acute and chronic health care problems, administer, prescribe and dispense medications, and enabling timely and targeted treatments.

·         Collaboration: Collaborate with EMS Advanced Provider Supervisor and Medical Director on APRU patient care related issues as delineated in the program’s protocols

·         Community Impact: Make a direct impact on community health by serving as a frontline healthcare provider, bringing immediate medical assistance to those in need.

·         Mental Health and Homeless Support: Provide compassionate and comprehensive care for those in need of mental health assistance and with individuals experiencing homelessness. Implement effective crisis intervention strategies to de-escalate mental health crises, identify individuals in need of mental health support, and collaborate with mental health professionals, social workers, and community stakeholders to develop and implement individualized care plans for homeless individuals.

·         Continuous Learning: Stay at the forefront of medical advancements and emergency care protocols with cutting-edge skills.

·         Compassionate Patient Advocacy: Provide compassionate care to patients and their families during emergencies, providing reassurance and support in challenging situations.

·         Adaptable Problem Solving: EMS is an ever-changing environment and requires skill adaptation to handle a wide range of medical emergencies and unforeseen challenges.

·         Mobile Health Education: Educate the community on emergency preparedness and first aid, while promoting a proactive approach to healthcare.

·         Critical Communication: Utilization of clear and concise communication, ensuring seamless collaboration with department members, dispatch, hospitals, and other healthcare providers.

·         Empowerment Through Immediate Care: Empower individuals by delivering immediate healthcare, significantly impacting outcomes in critical moments.

 

REQUIREMENTS

  1. At least one year of full-time paid experience as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in an emergency department or urgent care setting; and
  2. Licensed as a:
    1. Registered Nurse and certified as a Nurse Practitioner by the California Board of Registered Nursing with documentation of education and training as a Nurse Practitioner in family practice or emergency medicine, and possess a current license, Furnishing Number and a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration number; or
    2. Physician Assistant with documentation of education and training as a Physician Assistant in family practice or emergency medicine, and possess a current license and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration number; and
  1. Certified as a:
    1. Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) or an Emergency Nurse Practitioner (ENP) by a national center such as the American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP);
    2. Physician Assistant from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA); and
  2. Certified as a Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider, an Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Provider, and a Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Provider through the American Heart Association; and
  3. A valid Class ‘C’ California driver’s license.

 

HIGHLY DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

•      Previous experience in a pre-hospital setting (as an EMT or paramedic) or

•      Certification as a Mobile Intensive Care Nurse (MICN) by the Department of Health Services, County of Los Angeles.

In order to receive credit for highly desirable qualifications you must provide proof of certifications within 15 calendar days from date of filing your application.

 

EMERGENCY APPOINTMENT

The EMS Advanced Provider position will be filled through an emergency appointment. An emergency appointment is not a regular appointment. It is a temporary appointment that may be filled up to a maximum of one year or until an eligible list is established (City Charter Section1013). Your employment will either terminate at the end of the emergency appointment (unless you are appointed from an eligible list), or may be terminated at any time, for any reason, while you are on emergency appointment.

 

WORK LOCATION/SCHEDULE

The EMS Advanced Provider may be assigned to one of the following location types:

·         Designated fire station (or district) and dispatched to respond to 911 calls.

·         Metro Fire Communications (MFC – LAFD Dispatch Center) located at 500 E. Temple Street, Los Angeles CA 90012 as a telemedicine provider.

The EMS Advance Provider will be assigned to a 4/10 or a 3/12 work schedule, with overtime available.

 

NOTES:

1. An Emergency Appointment is a temporary appointment and will be contingent upon approval from the City’s Personnel Department. A permanent appointment will be made upon completion of the Civil Service examination. The successful incumbent for this emergency position will be required to take the examination and obtain a high enough score on the eligibility list in order to be selected for the permanent appointment.

2. The current salary range is subject to change. You may confirm the starting salary with the Fire Department before accepting a job offer.

3. EMS Advanced Provider are full-time employees, and are provided a comprehensive medical and dental flex benefits plan and membership in the Los Angeles City Employees Retirement System.
