DEPUTY CITY ATTORNEY

BUSINESS & COMPLEX LITIGATION DIVISION

CIVIL LITIGATION BRANCH

ANNUAL SALARY RANGE: $115,682 - $221,386

POSITION:                       The Office of the City Attorney has an immediate opening for an experienced litigator in the Business & Complex Litigation Division of the Civil Litigation Branch.

 

 

SECTION:                        The Business & Complex Litigation Division is responsible for complex litigation matters involving a broad range of practice areas involving City policies and practices.  The Division handles cases involving civil rights, the Americans with Disabilities Act, constitutional challenges to City ordinances, class actions, contract and business disputes, and a variety of other civil litigation against the City, its departments, and personnel.

 

 

DUTIES AND

RESPONSIBILITIES:      The primary responsibility of the attorney selected for this position will be the defense of complex and sophisticated civil litigation in state and federal courts.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:         Applicants for this position must have a license to practice law in all of the courts in the State of California. Additional requirements include:

·         At least three years of active civil litigation practice in California and Federal Courts;

·         Ability to deal effectively with public officials, departmental personnel, and members of the public;

·         Demonstrated strong research and writing skills in complex areas of law;

·         A sincere desire to vigorously and ethically litigate cases through pretrial and trial stages;

·         Strong oral communication and advocacy skills;

·         Sound judgment and strong organizational skills.

 

The following qualifications are desirable:

·         Significant civil litigation experience, especially in cases involving civil rights, statutory and constitutional challenges, and complex business disputes; and

·         Class action, judicial clerkship, or appellate experience.

 

 

WRITING SAMPLES:     Two writing samples composed by the candidate in the last two years are required.

 

 

PROBATION:                  Appointment to these exempt positions (non-Civil-Service) will be subject to a two year probationary period as required by Section 1050 of the City Charter.  Successful completion of the two year probationary period will result in tenure with the office.
