Standards Division has two Chemist II positions available at:

         2319 Dorris Pl, Los Angeles, CA; 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Chemists supervise Technicians and train new employees in the Environmental/Chemistry and Binder Laboratories.  Evaluate the performance of subordinate personnel, provide advice or disciplinary action if necessary.  Chemists perform difficult organic, inorganic, physical chemical analyses, and research studies in connection with wastewater, storm water, solid resources and industrial water treatment, construction and maintenance materials, and asphalt/binder materials. Collect samples in the field.  Follows QA/QC protocols and safety programs.  Prepares standard operating procedures for using new instruments and performs routine maintenance of the instruments.  Prepare, check, and review test reports that go to the clients, like the Bureau of Street Services, DWP, City of Glendale, and other City departments.  Make technical presentations at meetings and conferences.

REQUIREMENT(S)/MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S)
Graduation from a recognized four-year college or university with a major in Chemistry or Biochemistry, including coursework or experience utilizing at least two of the following instruments.
  1. Flow Injection Analyzer
  2. Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer or Mercury Analyzer
  3. Multi Element Oil Analyzer
  4. Gas Chromatograph
  5. High Performance Liquid Chromatograph or Ion Chromatograph
  6. Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometer
  7. Mass Spectrometer
  8. X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometer
  9. UV/VIS/Fluorescent Spectrophotometer
  10. Dynamic Shear Rheometer
Salary: $68,235.84-$102,458.16

Official school transcripts showing the completion of the required courses may be required prior to the start of employment. The selected candidates will be subject to a physical exam by the City’s Medical Services as well a background review, including fingerprints.
