MATERIALS TESTING ENGINEERING ASSOCIATE

The Standards Division/General Services Department is accepting applications for two (2) Full-time Emergency Appointment  Materials Testing Engineering Associate I positions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Specific tasks to be performed by these positions may include, but are not limited to, the following

  • Performs field observation of excavation for foundations, trenches, grading and demolition. Monitors the placement of earth fill for foundations, trenches grading and structure support. Serves as initial consultant for soil issues/problems encountered in the field.
  • Performs field investigations to address problems on the jobsite.
  • Performs quality assurance testing of asphalt pavements and soil compaction. Can perform both the nuclear and sand cone method to determine in place asphalt pavement and soil density. Samples cores, soil or construction materials from the jobsite or directly from supplier. Performs various pavement and soil tests at field laboratories and other required testing services.
  • Prepares test reports and daily activity reports for all construction activities that were monitored.
  • Serves as liaison person for Standards Testing Laboratories.
  • Supervises and trains Materials Testing Technicians performing basic construction monitoring.

Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in engineering, physics, chemistry, mathematics, geology, or a closely related field; or
  • Possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certificate recognized by the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists.

 

Work Schedule and Assignments:

These positions are based at the Standards Division testing facilities near Elysian Park. Field work will be performed for Public Works, Airports, Harbor projects and the City’s Pavement Preservation Program. Employees may be assigned other duties or work projects depending on the City’s needs or for training purposes. Incumbents must be able to drive small trucks with equipment and materials to and from the work sites, and may be required to work outdoor in inclement weather conditions.

5/40 Schedule. Overtime and night work may be required. Holidays and weekend work may be required.

Salary: The current salary range is $88,385.04 - $109,828.8
