Under the direction of the Equipment Repair Supervisor, the Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic performs the following duties:  

·    Performs preventive maintenance, inspections, trouble shooting, repairs, and testing on heavy duty fire department vehicles and equipment.  Completes related inspection forms and reports. 

·    Performs journey level mechanic work on all vehicle systems and components on fire engines pumpers aerial ladder trucks, A/C generators, construction equipment and many other specialty apparatuses.  Works in various shops and/or in the field. 

·    Inspects, diagnoses, troubleshoots, repairs, rebuilds, replaces and operates for testing firefighting centrifugal pumps rated at 1500 GPM.  

·    Overhauls fire engines, fire pump controls and discharge valves. 

·    Repairs, fabricates, and replaces pipe fittings and plumbing up to and in excess of 6 inches in diameter.  Installs and repairs firefighting foam systems.  Removes, repairs, and installs on-board water tanks. 

·    Inspects, diagnoses, troubleshoots, repairs, rebuilds, replaces, and operates for testing aerial ladders and manlift equipment and electrical systems.  Diagnoses and repairs related hydraulic components and circuits. 

·    Performs all aspects of automotive electrical work including testing and replacing batteries.  Services and repairs 120 VAC systems on fire apparatuses and repairs diesel auxiliary generators. 

·    Uses computers for vehicle diagnostics, work order parts, labor entries, and employee time keeping.
