The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) is seeking an experienced individual to head
the Emergency Medical Services Bureau as a Chief Physician. The Chief Physician
reports to the Chief Deputy, Emergency Operations Bureau. The position is exempt
from civil service.
The Chief Physician plans, coordinates, and manages the medical care and activities of
the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Bureau. The Chief Physician provides medical
oversight and direction for all emergency medical services, develops policies and
procedures, and justifies to the Department executive management proposals for
medical programs and initiatives. The Chief Physician directs and coordinates the
administration, fiscal management, monitoring, evaluation and operational control of the
medical programs. The position establishes and maintains necessary liaisons with local,
state, and federal offices involved in related occupational, correctional, emergency, and
other related medical care and acts as technical and policy advisor to the Department
management on matters related to public and employee medical and occupational
issues. The Chief Physician oversees EMS coordination, direction, and delivery of
emergency medical services and may respond to emergency incidents to provide direct
observation and field supervision of EMS incidents. The position applies sound
management principles and techniques in building and maintaining an effective work
force and fulfills equal employment opportunity responsibilities.
Possession of a medical degree; and
Board certification in family medicine, emergency care, or occupational health; or
Eight years of medical management experience and at least three years of supervisory
Experience and proficiency with computers, web-based programs, and electronic
medical records is highly desired.
A valid license to practice medicine in the State of California issued by the
Medical Board of California; a valid American Heart Association Health Care Provider
CPR Card, and a valid California driver's license are required.
