The Office of Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell is seeking a Legislative  Deputy. Based in City Hall, the Legislative Deputy will have day to day  responsibility to staff the Councilmember at Council and committee hearings and  assist with all aspects of legislative research, writing, community outreach, and  hearings on legislation. 

The ideal teammate is someone who is emotionally mature, a good  problem-solver, thoughtful, motivated, and an excellent communicator who is  interested in serving the City of Los Angeles. We want a person who is ready and  eager to join a very busy, hard-working team focused on getting things done for  the District. 

If selected, some of the job duties will include: 

· Working with the Legislative Director to review committee and department  reports and brief the Councilmember prior to hearings 

· Working with the Legislative Director to staff the Councilmember at  meetings and hearings and ensuring that all preparations and research  have been completed 

· Tracking motions through the legislative process 

· Participating in or leading meetings to respond to community questions  including meetings in the district 

· Attending meetings with various stakeholders and other district events as  needed which may include evenings and weekends 

· Representing the Councilmember at hearings and meetings · Assisting in drafting, editing, and preparing correspondence, briefing  memos, motions, and other documents 

· Contributing to the Councilmember's efforts to provide the highest level of  constituent service to the district 

· Building and maintaining relationships with City department staff, offices of  other elected officials, and community stakeholders 

· Responding to constituent questions about pending legislation 

How to apply

Candidate requirements: 

· Bachelor’s Degree in Public Policy or a related field

· Working knowledge of Los Angeles City Hall and the legislative process is  strongly preferred, but not required  

· Excellent written, verbal, and public speaking skills 

· Ability to multitask, work quickly, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced  environment 

· Knowledge of the 13th District is helpful 

· A valid California driver's license may be required 

· Writing samples may be requested

The selected candidate must be willing to work non-standard hours as needed,  including evenings and weekends, and perform tasks outside of his or her primary  work assignments as necessary. 

The position is entry level, full-time, and exempt from civil service. Salary will be  commensurate with experience.
