The City of Los Angeles Personnel Department is seeking part-time proctors to administer in-person tests to examinees for employment with the City of Los Angeles. Tests may be hand-written, computer-based, or performance tests where examinees perform a series of exercise events or operate vehicles or equipment.    
Responsibilities include providing orientation to examinees to ensure compliance with City exam policies and procedures, monitoring examinees' adherence to test instructions, enforcing examination time schedules, controlling and maintaining security of exam documents, maintaining exam security during the testing process, and responding to examinee questions.

Duties also include: reading test instructions aloud in a clear and concise manner from an instruction manual to a group of test candidates; checking candidates in at our online testing facility; setting up testing rooms with tables and chairs; ensuring a safe testing environment by ensuring all walkways are clear of debris or computer cables; carrying test bundles (at times weighing 10 or more pounds) up and down flights of stairs; patrolling rooms while tests are in progress; maintaining security over test booklets, answer sheets, and other testing material; and other related duties.
Administering computer-based tests require instructing and assisting examinees with the use of personal computers and testing software, as well as printing in some instances.  In some instances, it could also require setting up desktop computers and laptops in order to launch the test.


This is a part-time employment opportunity.  Hours are flexible and may include weekdays, weekends, and evenings.  
Most opportunities are located at or near the Personnel Building in downtown Los Angeles, with other limited locations throughout the City as needed.


1.   Six months of paid experience in customer service or office work with public contact.

The following qualifications are highly desirable:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in the operation of personal computers, laptops, launching software, and the ability to log into networks, print documents, and basic troubleshooting of these functions.
