The Board of Public Works – Office of Accounting is looking to fill two (2) Senior Accountant l positions: one (1) in the Special Funds Division (MICLA & SLMAF), and one (1) in the General Accounting Division (Hazardous Waste). As part of their routine duties, these positions are responsible for researching and determining funding availability through the City’s Financial Management System (FMS) reports and system tables before recommending approval of Board Reports to award contracts or amendments/change orders and encumber funds. In addition, Senior Accountant I positions process construction and personal services contract payments in an efficient and timely manner. Selected candidates will be responsible for supervising other accounting personnel. 

The positions are open to applicants who have civil service status in the class of Accountant (1513), and who posses two (2) years of experience in Accounts Payables with the City of Los Angeles in the class of Accountant.

• Excellent accounting, analytical, and reporting skills. 
• Strong computer skills, including the ability to prepare and formulate complex spreadsheets. 
• Good working knowledge of FMS and MERLIN. 
• Strong supervisory skills. 
• Ability to work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines. 
• Ability to work independently or as part of a team and make decisions. 
• Ability to interact effectively with other City departments and bureaus. 
• Good oral, writing, and interpersonal skills.

SELECTION PROCESS: A screening process may be used to identify the most qualified candidates. Only qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the hiring process. Final selection will include the review of candidates’ application/resume, personnel folders, past work, attendance records, written test (if applicable) and an oral interview by the Office of Accounting staff to evaluate the skills, knowledge, abilities, and qualifications of the candidates.

EMERGENCY APPOINTMENTS: An emergency appointment is a temporary appointment which does not require that you successfully compete in the Civil Service examination process. The appointment may not exceed one year and must be terminated immediately when a regular appointment can be made from an eligible list. The applicant appointed to the emergency appointment position must compete in the Civil Service process once it is available in order to be considered for a permanent position. (City Charter Section 1013).
