Under direct supervision of Safety Administrator/Safety Engineer: • Assists with developing plans, organizes, and helps to implement the Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) for the Personnel Department as well as Citywide departments • Assists with developing safety and health guidelines, policies, and procedures • Provides guidance to City departments that do not have internal safety staff and provides assistance with their written safety programs • Assists with conducting safety inspection of facilities and operations on a regular basis for Personnel Departments and as requested by City departments • Recommends corrective action on unsafe conditions and practices • Monitors accident and injury records to identify trends • Provides assistance with accident investigations • Reviews and makes recommendations on equipment operations for compliance with OSHA safety requirements • Conducts research and provides management with information on safety laws and codes pertinent to Department operations, including but not limited to OSHA, ordinances, and other regulatory agencies • Assists with developing and administrating safety and health training programs to comply with OSHA training requirements and regulatory changes • Conducts ergonomic assessments 

Requirements: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree in occupational health science, health and safety studies or a closely related field; or Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university and one year of full-time paid professional safety experience in the enforcement of Federal OSHA, CAL/OSHA or any state OSHA regulations which includes facility or field inspections and the development of safety programs.

If you are a current City employee (received a regular appointment) and you accept an emergency appointment, you will automatically be on “protective” leave from your current classification. If you are not currently a regular City of Los Angeles employee when you accept the emergency appointment and you cannot be appointed from an eligible list at the time your emergency appointment ends (one year or establishment of an eligible list, whichever comes first), you will be terminated from City employment.
