| POLICE EXPLORER PROGRAM INFORMATION |
The social and vocational experience offered by this program prepare these young men and women to take their places in the community. All Explorers become "members" of the Exploring Division, Boy Scouts of America, and must pay an annual membership fee. Educational and recreational trips are part of the Explorer Program. Many such trips involve visits to the police agencies throughout California and the nation.
As recreation activities, the Explorers have embarked on camping trips to such places as Yosemite National Park, Big Sur and Sequoia National Park, where Forest Rangers provide the group with information regarding the field of conservation. The Explorers also perform police related functions by assisting clerical and sworn personnel with filing, tours, field searches for evidence and crowd control.
The Youth Services Section, Juvenile Division, coordinates the 96 hour Explorer Recruit Academy at the Los Angeles Police Academy. This academy training is composed of academic instruction provided by police officers of the LAPD, and also physical and drill training. Satisfactory scores on two written and two physical qualification examinations must be obtained before the Explorer recruits are entitled to wear the Law Enforcement Explorer uniform and receive membership cards and certificates verifying completion of training.
As a result of the training and direction received as Explorers, many young men and women have chosen law enforcement as a career. If you are age 14 and in the ninth grade; (or 15 regardless of grade) through 20 years of age and are interested in becoming a Law Enforcement Explorer, please call (213) 485-3133 for further information.
